Volunteer Treasurer for the Board of Directors

Are you passionate about improving the lives of patients and advancing health care across Alberta? The Health Coalition of Alberta (HCA) is seeking a skilled volunteer to join our Board of Directors as Treasurer. If you have experience in accounting and a commitment to advocating for better health care outcomes for patients, we would love to hear from you!

Our Governance: The Health Coalition of Alberta’s Board of Directors is composed of volunteer leaders from the health charity and patient group sector who are deeply committed to our mission. As a governance Board, we guide the strategic direction of the organization, working closely with the Executive Director to implement our vision and goals.

In addition to fulfilling standard roles and responsibilities, our Board members are active advocates and engaged members of the Coalition. Key responsibilities include:

  • Setting the vision, strategies, and direction for the Coalition.
  • Ensuring the financial viability of the Coalition.
  • Establishing policies and guidelines for the effective operation of the Coalition.
  • Exercising fiduciary responsibility through prudent risk management.

Role Overview: As Treasurer, you will play a key role in managing the financial well-being of the Health Coalition of Alberta. This includes overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, and transaction management. This virtual position allows for flexibility and engagement from anywhere in the province.

Board Meetings: Our Board meets virtually approximately 10 times per year, making it easy for Board members to participate regardless of location.

Board terms are two years, with members able to serve up to three consecutive terms. Board members are expected to represent the Coalition responsibly to their communities and advocate for our mission and positions as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities for the Treasurer:

  • Process and deposit membership fees and financial contributions.
  • Maintain accurate membership records, including payment status.
  • Manage accounts receivable and payable, ensuring timely payments to vendors.
  • Reconcile financial transactions and statements, ensuring transparency.
  • Prepare and present the annual budget, including recommendations for membership fees.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and arrange for the annual review of financial records.
  • Attend Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM), presenting financial reports and contributing to strategic discussions.
  • Act as a signing authority at the Health Coalition of Alberta’s financial institution.

Desired Skills and Expertise:

  • Formal accounting and/or bookkeeping experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the not-for-profit sector and its financial processes, particularly in health care.
  • Ability to communicate financial matters clearly to individuals without accounting backgrounds.
  • A strong commitment to patient advocacy and the Health Coalition of Alberta’s mission.
  • Must be a voting member of the Health Coalition in good standing.
